What causes a toilet to leak from the base when flushing?

Most base leaks during flushing come from a failed wax ring seal. Loose closet bolts or a wobbly toilet can break the seal. A cracked flange or bowl, or a low flange, can let water escape. Water from the supply line or tank bolts can run down and pool at the base. Serving Roanoke and Cave Spring.

Quick checks:

  • Gently tighten the two closet bolts.
  • Dry everything, flush, and watch the base.
  • If it still seeps or the toilet rocks, the ring and flange need service.
